random italics in bibliography

I'm having trouble trying to figure out a problem with a bibliography. The format is APA 5th and contains 181 references. Everything is fine for the first 70% or so of the bibliography but as it comes to the end, random italics appear - author names, parts of titles etc. When I look at the original references and when I look at the 'view formatted' window, there are no italics in these references. Any ideas what may be causing the problem?
