Using Bookends in multiple non-Mac locations

I currently have a large reference database (with associated PDFs) running on Endnote 9.0 on my Macbook, which integrates nicely with Word 2004. I have the disc for Word 2008, but am holding off installing it, because it does not operate even with the most recent version of Endnote. Neither does it work with Pages. I'm therefore considering switching to Bookends, although I am concerned about the ability of the software to import my Endnote database and keep the associated pdfs linked to the records. (Will it do that?)

As a further complication, I also work at two other locations, and it would be useful to have the same database available at each (one is running reference manager, one is running endnote). Both of these are Windows machines. Ideally, I planned to have the Macbook acting as my central database, and then periodically update the other two sites to match the Macbook Bookends database. The databases would be used independently for the purposes of referencing. I am not concerned about working on the same document at all sites, just access to the data.

I'd be interested to see if Bookends would be the way forward?

Hi,

If you export from EN as XML and import that into Bookends, your references and links to pdfs should be retained (you should either move or copy your EN attachments to the default Bookends attachment folder). You can try this with up to 50 references with the demo. In general, exchanging data with XML is probably the best way to go (I'm not sure if Reference Manager reads/write EN XML, but if it doesn't you can use the Refer format to exchange data). In theory you could also set up Bookends as a server and access your references from your PCs via a browser, but that may not be feasible if you are using a MacBook.
