We're testing the next version of Reference Miner. The major new feature is that it uses WebKit, and you can save pdfs and web pages by dragging them to the Finder (PubMed and Amazon, not Library of Congress). The intent, of course, is to migrate this to Bookends in the future. If you are interested in previewing Reference Miner 3, please contact me at

I am just wondering about this as it sounds extremely promising: is the idea to make it eventually possible to save random webpages also? Or is this confined to sites like PubMed etc?
I often find myself saving articles from news websites and manually adding those to the BE db is quite laborious. I know it is possible to capture site data (and the site) via Zotero but some functionality like this in BE would be even better.

At the moment we're planning to restrict the browser function to appropriate literature sites (PubMed, Web of Science, JSTOR, etc.). If there is demand for it it might be possible to allow users to enter their own urls, although I haven't given this much thought.

Well, I would absolutely welcome it if BE would somehow be able to capture metadata of other websites (like the name of a page or news article, URL). It would be a time-saver, no idea how much is involved technically. My ideal set-up would be to be able to easily add webpags to BE and add the page as a PDF to the db. I have asked on the Zotero forum if they plan to add a possibility to save a page as a pdf and not only a webarchive but that is not in the works for the moment. But this is of course another topic..
