BibTeX import - double dash problem

I've decided to switch to Bookends and I'm now trying to import my bibtex references. I will continue to use LaTeX as my writing tool of choice so I want to preserve the references as is (or at least as close as possible). I'm now cleaning up my bibtex file so it will import as cleanly as possible and most of it seem to work just fine (I'm using the bibtex revised import filter) but I've got a problem with page ranges.

My page ranges are listed as "12--23" and I want to keep them like that, when I import them I get "12X23" where X is a black diamond with a '?', if I change the bibtex file to use Latin-1 instead of UTF-8 (and make the proper adjustments in Bookends) I get a 'D' with a dash through the left line.

I can of course adjust all these entries manually but I suppose I'm missing something basic (I couldn't found anything in the forum or the manual)

There are setting in preferences that enable BibTeX and TeX character handling. If you can't get this to work for consecutive dashes, please contact me for tech support.
