BibTeX quotation marks

Sorry, another newbie question. I LaTeX I create a US style quote (“hello” ) by writing ``hello''. I noticed that in Bookends I can just type "Hello" and it gets translated to ``Hello" which is very nice ... is there some way to get the last " to converted to '' also? (the manual mentions the first " but not the second)

Or should I be thinking in another way?

Hi, you're talking about export as BibTeX? And what do you want the closing " to be converted to (I can't see a difference in your posted question)?

:D The font used in the forum makes it difficult to see

The way I'm taught to write this is LaTeX is ``hello'' (the last " is actually two ')

From the manual I see that Bookends will convert `` to " on import (p316) and the first " after a space to `` on export (p156) ... which is perfect. Now when I try this with the text (in the abstract field):

Finally, we present our preliminary conclusions and discuss the future directions of this research effort. "Hello" “Hello”

The first hello uses quotation marks, the second uses the 'curly' version, when I format this as bibtex I get

Finally, we present our preliminary conclusions and discuss the future directions of this research effort. "Hello" ``Hello”

So the first hello doesn't seem to get translated (I don't know why, it did when I first tried) and the second correctly translates the left quotation mark but not the second.

So right now I don't understand how I should type to make the best use of Bookends (manually typing ``hello'' works of course). Any advice?

Yes, I looked at the code. Bookends will convert a smart open quote to ``. It leaves normal quotes alone. I suppose it should convert a smart close quote (curved apostrophe) to two single quotes ('' -- two single quote marks). I'll do this for the next update...
