Citation format query

Post by physci »

Hello! I searched but couldn't find an answer to this in the forum or in the guide.

I have a specific formatting requirement. Can anyone help? Greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
This is what I would like to have:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit (Noran et al., 2008, Science, 101). Maecenas interdum nulla (John et al., 2001, Nature, 312). Etiam volutpat neque non erat.

I am therefore required to present as (Author, Year, Journal, Issue) as my citation.

Incidentally this is almost the format of the default bookends temporary citation in mellel, and I'm trying to make it as a permanent citation.

Pls advise. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Just to be clear -- are you aware that you have to scan the Mellel manuscript to convert the temporary citation to the final form? The format you use to scan (e.g. APA 5th, Chicago, Science, etc.) determines how the final citation will appear, after the scan.

Yes, Jon. I am aware of that.

What I'm not able to achieve is that after scanning, the final citation does not come out in (Author, Year, Journal, Issue) format, no matter how hard I've tried to change settings in the preferences, format manager etc..

Pls advise. Thanks.

OK, what format are you using? And what does the citation look like after a scan?

Thanks again, Jon.

I'm using the Administrative Science Quarterly. My citations now look like:
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit (Noran et al., 2008)

On a completely unrelated topic, why do some of my citations come up as being red? For eg: I get..
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit (Noran et al., 2008). Maecenas interdum nulla (John et al., 2001).

That's to be expected. That format creates citations of the author-date type (see the second tab of the format definition). If you want something different, you'll need to create your own custom citation format (details are in the User Guide -- see the APA 5th format for an example). In other words, you need to tell Bookends what the final citation should look like, the format you are using isn't going to give you what you want.

I don't know -- that's not coming from Bookends, but Mellel. I haven't checked -- could that mean it was a citation that wasn't matched in the database? Just a guess...

Citations were all matched. No errors came up. However, I do have several citations that end up with red font. I'm going to try unmatching and rescanning to see if I can figure this out.. Pls let me know if you think there's a better solution.

Read up on custom citation formats. If you can't figure out how to make, contact me directly for tech support (support@sonnysoftware.com).

As for the red citations, as I said Bookends isn't doing that. I suggest you ask RedleX what it signifies.

Jon,

You may ignore that email. I just figured it out.

All this while, I was confused with the 'formatting option' pane of the format manager. When I made changes to that pane, I was given the option of an example, which to me generated how my bibliography would look like, and not my citation. So all this while, I was under the impression that changing the primary and secondary order did not change the citation, and only changed my bibliography.

Trial and error finally sorted it out. I eventually figured that combining the citations saved by a specific order with the required bibliography format would generate what was required.

Thanks again.
