Color citations

Is it possible to color citations?

I'm using Mellel and Bookends.
I've gone through the guide where one can custom italicize or bold the citations. But how would one add color to it? I tried to click on styles -> blue, and while the format manager shows a, d, after scanning in Mellel, it comes up without the color.

As an example, this is what I'm trying to achieve:

Bookends will output color if the text is actually colored in the reference, but won't do it for a whole citation.
