Request: case-sensitive and improved ignore lists

Concerning: alphabetical listing of Van, van, De, de, Van de, van de, etc.

I think I must be speaking for other users as well, especially those often working with Dutch and Belgian authors, where but 'van de Capelle' and 'Van de Capelle' could occur, and need to be distinguished. (Similar problems must occur with German versus American systems of dealing with prepositions such as 'von', 'Von', ...).

According to Flemish-Belgian custom, names such as 'Van de Capelle' are listed under the V, if these names occur with a capital letter (as they usually do, in Flanders). In the Netherlands, similar names occur most often with a miniscule ('van de Capelle'), and are listed under the C. (Preferably, as 'Capelle, J. van de').

In BookEnds, I experience the following problems:

1. The ignore list should be able to deals with combinations of words. While I entered 'van', 'de', and 'van de' in the ignore list, 'van de Capelle' is not listed under the C, as I want it to be, but under the D (of 'de')! When I switch off the use of the ignore list, it ends up with a small letter under the V, which is not what I want either.

2. The ignore list is not case-sensitive. It should be. I want to distinguish between 'Van de Capelle', whom I want under the V, and 'van de Capelle', who should be under the C.

If I enter my Dutch 'van de Capelle'-like authors as 'Capelle, J. van de', they get transformed into 'J.v.d. Capelle'. And even if I enter them as 'Capelle, J., van de", the problem is not solved, because APA in-text citations then refer to them as (Capelle, 2008), while I want to get (Van de Capelle, 2008). Note that for in-text references, it is also customary for the names of Dutch authors as 'van de Capelle' to be capitalized into e.g. (Van de Capelle, 2008). My last request would then be that the program can force initial capitalization onto the output for in-text references.

I have only just recently started using Bookends seriously (so maybe some of the features are available, and I don't know about them -- in which case, my apologies), but to be honest, I really hope that these little things can be fixed, because at least in my every-day use of the program, they prove to be a serious pain in the neck and make me consider switching back to manual reference processing.

Thanks for the help!

Rik

Hi,

I believe Bookends does handle multiple words in the ignore list (when I add "van de" to the list, "van de Capelle" sorts between the B's and D's -- not as Cappelle, J. van de, however). If you're not seeing that, please contact us directly for tech support (support@sonnysoftware.com).

As for case sensitivity, this is the first request I've had for this. Can others comment on whether this is a feature they'd like to see also?
