Is it possible to create cross-references in Bookends, with this I mean that if I create a reference to a book it is then possible to create entries for individual papers which are then cross-referenced to the book so I don't have to fill in booktitle, publisher etc for the book?

Yes and no.
Yes, in that you can use 'Replicate as book chapter' which creates a new reference and puts the relevant information in the right fields.
No in that there isn't any cross-referencing in the database. If you input the details of an edited book, then replicate as book chapter, then go back and change details on the parent reference, they do not propagate to the daughter references.
Since there aren't any cross-references in Bookends, you also can't do this:
producing a bibliography like that automatically, without any need to put a reference to the edited book in the document to be scanned. What I mean is, if the document contains references to more than x papers in one edited book (where x might be 1, 2 or 3, say), truncate the information about the book in the bibliography entries for the book chapters to [author, date], and put the edited book itself in the bibliography too.

a recent thread.)
