viewing attached pdf in external app: (non-)tmp file?

Hi,
I have the problem (in 10.4.3, and at least since 10.4) that when I click on the Preview icon in the Attachments Pane to read a PDF outside of Bookends (in Skim.app, in my case) it creates a tmp file at a location such as this:
This means that I can't save annotatations to the PDF (in a .skim file in Attachments folder) when I approach the PDF from within Bookends.
I feel like in 10.3 it opened up not a tmp version but rather the original file (that in my "Attachments folder"). I can't find any (new) settings to change this behavior in 10.4.x. Is there a way I can continue to open a PDF (in Skim.app) from the Attachments Pane but actually work on the original file in my Attachments Folder?
Thanks!
