How do I choose "DropBox" as a "remote database" for Bookends to start syncing my work and home computers?

Hi,

I don't use DropBox, so I can't say how you should use it. Hopefully others who have used it can provide some guidance. I can tell you that you won't be able to choose it as a "remote database" from within Bookends -- only a Bookends database can be selected.

This works quite well. However, you must add the .bdb suffix to the database file that resides in your Dropbox folder. If you have slow internet connection at home, you may notice it spending lots of time syncing, but with broadband it not too bad.

Can you be a bit more explicit about how you sync the Bookends database using DropBox?

With most other things I just move the whole lot over into DropBox.

If a database extension has to be changed then I assume that there is another step - like using the sync function from within Bookends.

Thanks if you can help me get this set up efficiently - keeping database and attachments synced between Desktop and Laptop isn't really working for me so far.

I have just done this and it seems to be working fine. Copy your Bookends folder over into your DropBox folder. Then for each of the databases contained in the DropBox version: click on the name; press the enter key which will let you edit the name; right-arrow to go to the end of the name and remove the highlight; type ".bdb"; press the enter key again to exit the file-name editing process.

If you're then happy with it ... remember to do the same for all the databases and any backups you have in the Backup folder within the Bookends folder in DropBox ... then it's up to you whether to keep the original stored somewhere on your hard disk. If you open the DropBox version by double-clicking on it, it will thereafter appear on the list under the <Open> option in the Bookends <File> menu. I actually renamed the database on DropBox entirely, so there won't be any confusion between that one and the one on the main hard disk.

I'm now going to turn on my MBA to check that it syncs properly and I can open the database from there.
