Drag and drop references from Papers

Hi Jon,

Is it possible to drag and drop references from Papers directly into BE? I recall from your other post that BE handles the "Send to BE" from Papers thru XML(EndNote). So, I've tried this dropping a reference directly into BE with the "XML (EndNote)" option selected but it didn't work.
I got this error instead: "Error: XML parser error 2: syntax error"
Is it doable in the current BE?

One other question. The "Send to BE" from Papers implementation was very slick. However, I've noticed BE cannot catch duplicated references sent from Papers this way. Is there a way to display it like what you've implemented for the Pubmed search results?
Thanks for your help.

If you export from Paper as XML, Bookends should import that.

The direct "Send to BE" is indeed slicker, and I recommend that. Run Refs -> Remove Duplicates after the import to get rid of ones you don't want.

Hi Jon,

I apologize if this has been addressed elsewhere but a forum search turned up this old thread as the latest instance of the "XML parser error".

More recently, however, new Bookends updates began to affect my ability to bring in references from the Papers app. At first I tried the solution of exporting from Papers as an Endnote XML file. To my surprise, not only did this approach work well, but it actually turned out to be better because it would bring in the authors' full names (not just the abbreviation of the first names plus the full last name). This was a great time saver.

However, one of the latest (maybe the last?) Bookends updates also broke the XML bridge for me. Now I get one of those dreaded "XML parser error". I'm using the latest version, 11.0.7

Could you help with this? I'm sure there are more than a few of us out there who rely on a combination of Bookends and Papers. I would prefer to see the old Papers-to-Bookends bridge to work again, it was far simpler since I used the CTRL+B keystroke to zip them over (except, of course, for the truncation of the author's first name).

Many thanks for your continuing work on the app, and especially the short update cycles.

Hi,

If there is a parser error it is almost certainly because the xml created by Papers is malformed or has some forbidden characters. You can send me such a file (one reference only) and I can take a look and see. Please send to support@sonnysoftware.com.

Hi Jon,

Well, a miracle happened: I tested it again with three different sets of journal articles from my Papers database and they all worked. I used even articles with foreign language characters and extensive abstracts, from different journals, and articles downloaded from different online indexes.

Unfortunately, I can't remember right now which were the articles that I tried to bring into Bookends using the XML bridge. However, I will send you a file as soon as the problem happens again.

Thanks for posting a quick response and your willingness to work on the matter.

I'm having problems sending from Papers to BE as well. I typically get dialogue stating that either the reference was imported, which, however, isn't imported or that the reference already exists, which isn't the case either. I also tried to import by drag'n'drop but got a 'Nil Object Error'.
Any help appreciated.

Please Rebuild your database and see if that fixes these issues. If not, please followup off-forum with tech support (support@sonnysoftware.com).
