Nil object error

I have suddenly started getting a "nil object error" response when I try to open an attachment in Bookends entries. I thought there was a problem with the attachment itself, so I removed it and tried again, but when I selected the file to attach, same error. Any suggestions? I can't open any attachments at all, either through the paperclip or through attachment inspector. The files themselves are fine.
I'm using 9.2.2 on OS 10.3.9. This may be part of the problem, of course... Yes, I'm saving for a new computer.
