I'm curious to know how the unique ID number is being generated? I started a new database and the first reference I input got assigned a unique ID #192. Strange. I then put in four more references and they were assigned unique ID numbers that are 5 digit numbers ranging from 13720 to 35410.

Is there any way for me to control the numbers that are assigned? I'd like to start with number 100 and go from there. I have hard copies of my references and I'd like to be able to write the unique ID number on them. I can do this with the way the numbers are now, but they are huge numbers that would be easier if I could just start with #100 and go sequentially from there.

I've discussed this in several other threads, but let's do it again. The unique is a random number that is partially constrained by the size of the database (larger db's have a larger range of numbers to choose from). This gets around a serious problem inherent in a sequential number scheme, like that used by EndNote. With sequential numbering, if you rely on the unique id (for hardcopy records or for citing references in a paper) you cannot merge databases or share references with others. The reason is that are almost guaranteed to be conflicts (both databases will have references starting from 1) and the newly imported/merged/shared unique id's will have to be changed. Although it's possible to have such "collisions" with a random number scheme, it is extremely rare because Bookends uses a large pool of numbers to choose from.

Having said all that, you can override the system if you want. Option-Command-click on the unique id and you can change it (Bookends will check to ensure what you enter is unique). But I recommend you don't. If you want to keep hardcopies (which has become much less important in the era of pdfs) you can still use the unique ids, just accept that the numbers will be large and not sequential.

Thanks for the info. Sorry for the repeat information. I had tried to do several searches in the forums and within the PDF user manual to see if this was listed.

Any possibility of making this thread a permanent sticky at the top- or a section with permanent threads so newer users (or forgetful ones like me) can search for the info. Might be a way to cut down on repeat questions like mine.
