can't get rid of parentheses in footnote citations

Since I just updated to the latest, I now hit the Cite button in Mellel (2.6), using the Chicago A (formatted with Chicago A footnotes) format. Two things are different and worse than before. (1) Less important - the "Scan a document" window used to appear over my Mellel window so I could, for example, unclick the Biblio option, etc. Now I have to go back to Bookends to see that window. The "Scanning document" window does appear on top of my Mellel window, but the other one does not.
(2) More importantly, all the footnotes now have parentheses around the entire note. I've checked the "Formats Manager" and it seems to be OK, as far as I can tell. There is also a period after the book/article title, instead of a comma, then no space, and then the page number. No idea why these things have changed all the sudden, but all was working without a hitch prior to the latest upgrade today.
