I’m new to Bookends and very excited about its potential, but I can’t figure out how to make “off the cuff” temporary citations.
For example, let’s say I have a citation: “Brown, KD, BS Hostager, and GA Bishop. 2001. “Differential Signaling and Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor-Associated Factor (Traf) Degradation Mediated By Cd40 and the Epstein-Barr Virus Oncoprotein Latent Membrane Protein 1 (Lmp1).”. J Exp Med 193:943-54.”
According to the manual, I should be able to type anything unique to this entry, and it will scan. I type {Brown 2001} for example. When I scan the document (Mellel) it doesn’t recognize this temporary citation. I have checked that I'm using the correct brackets (in preferences) and I am, so that's not it.
I’m just looking for a way I can temporary cite something without Bookends open or available, and then be able to scan it later. I thought this was pretty straight forward in the manual on page 157, but I must be missing something...
Can anyone help me out?
Problem with Creating Own Temporary Citations
Re: Problem with Creating Own Temporary Citations
Hi,
To be clear, in Mellel you are having Mellel convert the text {Brown 2001} into a Mellel citation object, right? Or you are entering the citation manually (using the Mellel bibliography palette)?

Re: Problem with Creating Own Temporary Citations
Hi Jon,
I am having Mellel convert the text.
So, I'm looking for a way I can cite something without having to switch back to Bookends or look at any additional information. If I type something, and happen to know that Brown wrote it in 2001, I'm hoping to be able to simply type {Brown 2001}.

You can. Contact me off-forum and send the Mellel document and your database (both zipped).

Re: Problem with Creating Own Temporary Citations
Hi Jon,
Okay, I think I might have figured it out - please confirm.
On Mellel
When creating a custom temporary citation, put it in brackets as we said above. For example, {Brown 2001}.
On MELLEL, you must first select "Convert Text to Citations." THEN you can scan the document and it'll be correct.
On Word
Just scan the document with your custom temp citation.
I completely missed this is the manual (I don't see it anywhere). Is there a quicker way to do this in Mellel?

Re: Problem with Creating Own Temporary Citations
That's going to be covered in the Mellel documentation, I imagine.
Yes, there's a quicker way. In Mellel, open the bib palette. One of the buttons allows you to "Enter Citation Manually". Do that (do NOT add the surrounding curly brackets, just type in the temp citation).
