Bug? Smart Groups and Color Labels - Groups "detoriate"

Hello,
Similar to this fellow user I am tracking my work with color labels via smart groups (e.g. all references with status "needs to be read" with or without a combination of keywords or other stuff). This works just fine for a couple of days, but then my smart groups kind of deteriorate, i.e., references with other color labels than defined in the smart group gradually start to show up.
This is quite annoying. Reindexing the database does not solve it. Additionally, it seems you cannot do an SQL query for color/status labels. When I recreate the smart group (you cannot edit them), everything is fine again.
Is this a bug? Is there some kind of workaround? It makes having labels pretty useless to me. Neither is it possible to *Search for color labels* in the find field, so I assume there is some kind of design flaw (probably because color labels were introduced as an afterthought).
Any suggestions?
TIA,
Dominik
