Zotero to Bookends workflow: via BibTeX??

There have been a couple of threads discussing exporting a zotero library to Bookends, with all the attachments included:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2069&p=9528&hilit=zotero#p9528
But I would like to discuss exporting Zotero library WITHOUT attachments. In other words, I want to use Bookends for citations and bibliographies.
I wanted to ask which format people use to export and import.
In particular, I would really like the "short title" field to be transferred across.
Zotero's Refer and RIS output both import into Bookends cleanly, but Zotero doesn't add the "short title" field.
Of the "standard" formats (ie ignoring zotero RDF), only Zotero's BibTeX output contains the "shorttitle" field.
However, Zotero's BibTex output looks a little strange, lots of extraneous curly braces. In the example below, part of the editor and publisher have extra {} around them.
@book{macwilliams_japanese_2008,
address = {Armonk {N.Y.}},
title = {Japanese visual culture : explorations in the world of manga and anime},
isbn = {9780765616012},
shorttitle = {Japanese visual culture },
publisher = {{M.E.} Sharpe},
editor = {Mark W. {MacWilliams}},
year = {2008}
BibDesk doesn't like Zotero's BibTex output either.
So, any ideas?? Perhaps there's a script that cleans up Zotero's BibTeX output (de-TeXes it?)?
Is there some ingenious method I've not thought of, like using CiteULike or something as an intermediary???
What's your zotero to Bookends workflow?
One more aside: most of these formats (BibTeX, Refer, RIS) don't seem to have an "edited book" type, at least not in the way zotero outputs them. Is there some way of having a conditional import ("if type='book' and there's no author but there is an editor, then change type to 'edited book'")?
