Removing Field Codes

Hi:

When uploading a Bookends-formatted paper to a journal website's automatic submission service, the server usually converts the uploaded doc-file to PDF. Is the fact that I cannot (?) remove Bookend's field codes from the DOC going to interfere with the (Adobe) PDF-conversion on the journal website?

I am in the course of trying several bibliography mangers right now to switch from the terribly unstable EndNote X2 where I could remove field codes after finishing a paper. Up to now I find Bookends the most comfortable alternative although it has problems retrieving and copying the PDF-attachments from my EndNote library. This is a little nuisance.

If you don't want the field codes, repeat the scan and uncheck "Retain hidden citations". Of course you can't rescan that paper, but if it's the final step it doesn't matter.

As for accessing pdfs in your existing EN library, you can either copy them to the Bookends default attachments folder, or set the Bookends default attachment folder to whereever EN has stashed them (this is set in Bookends preferences). Please contact tech support if you're having problems with this.

Thanks Jon, that does the trick. Bookends is now my first choice.

I have tried to rescan a document, with the "Retain hidden citations" unchecked. It unscans and rescans but I still have the field codes in my Word document. Am I doing something wrong? FYI: Word and BE are both newest versions and OS X is Lion.

Best,
Dan

Are you sure the citations that still have field codes were inserted by Bookends (not EndNote)? And if so, are the delimiters used for the original scan the same ones you have selected (in Bookends preferences)? If yes, can you unscan the document and have the original temp citations restored?
