Keyboard shortcut for coloring text?

For good or ill, I need to be able to color text segments in my research notes all too often. It would be really helpful to have a keyboard shortcut for this (one for black and another for red would be enough). I cannot find such a shortcut in the menus, but perhaps a "hidden" key combo exists? If not, could I automate the process in some other way? Perhaps a script?

Thank you!

Most of the good command key shortcuts are taken. What would you suggest?

Thanks for the customarily speedy response!

Any shortcut, really, would be better than digging into the menu structure with the mouse. For example:
Control-Option-R for red
Control-Option-B for black

I tried to create a macro with Quickeys but it doesn't seem to play well with Bookends.

OK:

Control-Command-B for black
Control-Command-R for red

in Bookends 11.
