Non reproducible bug

Hi,

I was adding some notes to a reference via the reference window. I had typed a good 1500 words or so when I decided to create a new item. I tend to always close the reference window before invoking or creating a new reference, but I must have been in a hurry because I just pressed cmd-N without exiting the notes pane of the reference window first.

As expected, all fields of the reference window became blank and ready to accept the information of the new item. I was shocked, however, to discover a few minutes later that the notes in the initial reference had completely disappeared!

I quit Bookends and reran the application, only to confirm that the notes were indeed lost. I also got a message that my database needed rebuilding. This was also strange for two reasons. First, I had rebuilt the database as recently as the day before and had done very little bibliographic work in the meantime, with no apparent crashes or other accidents that could have compromised the data integrity. Second, because rebuilding did not solve the issue yet repairing, which to my understanding is a less drastic process, did!

Thankfully I was able to partially restore the lost notes from an online backup service that I use, so all is well. But I though to submit a report of this event hoping it can help iron out any remaining bugs. Data loss is, obviously, our worst computing-nightmare.

This is a non-reproducible bug on my system, but has been occurring in the past as well, albeit rarely.

Thank you.

Rebuilding and repairing are completely independent processes that do very different things (which is why we have both). For whatever reason it sounds like the sector in the database in which the data was stored had a problem (hard to say from this). Rebuilding usually takes care of all that, but sometimes a Repair is better. You can always do a Verify on your database to see if everything's OK.
