Customizing background colors

Working really long hours lately (research proposals), my eyes are getting irritated by the prevalent white background of most app windows on the Mac. So I am trying to change those backgrounds to shades of grey (with a blueish tint) in as many apps as I can.
In Bookends, I would cherish the possibility to change the background colors of both the bottom and the right panes. This includes the "cloud" view, the "formatted" view, the "summary" view, and the "all" view. Currently, the only view with adjustable backgrounds is the note stream (which looks great in BE11, by the way).
Is there a hidden preference we could access to change these colors? It would greatly relieve my eyes, I must say. As a temporary measure, I have dimmed my monitor as much as reasonably possible, but obviously this precaution isn't viable in the long term.
Thanks.
