Hello,

I am trying to learn how to scan the internet with Bookends. I use the command File>Online search.
What I have discovered is that the results, as far as I checked them, contain mainly, if not only, references of books.

I would like to know how to search for articles and papers on a specific subject. Is it possible to limit the search for this category? Is it possible to look for articles on the internet without referring to specific source, for example: the Library of the Congress, or others libraries.?

Which sources have you checked? If you've searched Amazon or a library you are likely to get mainly books. Given that libraries very rarely indexes articles within journals, you probably won't find many journal articles.

If you want to find articles, a place like JSTOR is a good place to check (Bookends has a search template for JSTOR in the online search, but you may need to use a uni network with a site licence to be able to search through their articles). If you take a look at the import filter manager under the File menu, you may find more useful places to search.

To my knowledge, you can't search more than one site at a time, i.e. you can't search for a specific term on Amazon, Library of Congress and British Library simultaneously. Unfortunately, I think you have to search one place at a time for what you are looking for. If you need more power, you might find that a tool like DEVONagent will be more appropriate for your needs.

Alternatively, you can choose the "Bookends browser" in the online search. This opens up a web browser that lets you surf around and find references as you like.

Article searches really depend on if you access the web via a university network (e.g. via VPN) and field of research. If you are in a university network, then JSTOR and Web of Science can be good places to look for articles. PubMed of course, if you are into medicine/biology related research (but I guess then you would already know about PubMed). In all cases, you can of course also use the Google Scholar search, regardless of connection and field of specialization and status of the journal (not everything is listed in the citation indices on which Web of Science is built).

I usually search articles via Google Scholar in my web browser (Camino). When I have found the article that I am looking for, I download the PDF and the citation info in RIS (preferably) or Endnote (if RIS is not possible) format, which includes the abstract. These I import into Bookends, where I will clean up the fields and enter / modify keywords.
I prefer to do it like this because the information provided in the publisher’s citation export is almost always more detailed.

For whatever reason, I never really grew into using the Bookends built-in browser for this kind of activity. I try now and then but give up because things do not really work the way in which I think they would… but your mileage may vary

Nope, it is “just another browser” – I like it, so I took the opportunity of praising it

A follow-up question:
Is there a way that with the references collected from the internet of articles, I have tied with google scholar and tried to specific subject 500 hits. My question: is there a command in bookends to complete the list with the abstract of each reference?

Google Scholar doesn't provide abstracts.

Hi,

I've got 2 problems with PubMed Searches :

1) when performed via Bookends, the search for "circadian OR cryptochrome" over the past 7 days retrieves 9 references. When performed directly in PubMed, it retrieves 88.

2) how can I tell Bookends to use a specific link to access PubMed ? My institution has agreements with many publishers to allow free uploading of PDFs, but this requires a special access to PubMed via a dedicated link (with username and pwd).

I just did a search for

circadian OR cryptochrome

in Bookends and in Safari. Both returned 64563 references.

It looks like PubMed is acting up again.

As for a dedicated search link, you can't do that with Bookends direct online search -- it's going through PubMed web services, not the web site server. You could with Bookends browser, I imagine.

Is there a way to import web page articles to Bookends similar to what can be done with other programs like Zotero?

You can use Bookends "Online Search" feature to import webpages into Bookends. I don’t know all the features that Zotoero offers during this import, but Bookends can interpret some of the data on the page to populate the fields for this entry too.

I assume you mean import reference metadata, not the web page itself (as a webarchive, which Bookends can easily do). To import the metadata, use Bookends Browser. It can import references from web pages that have COinS, dois, or pmids (as well as JSTOR).
