I was wondering if it is possible with Bookends to include the date of the original-publication in the citation, as e.g. the ASA-format asks for. It should be look like Malinowski ([1922]1972). As far as I know this is possible with other applications like Endnote, but I can't find any option to change the citation-format.

You can create any sort of in-text final citation you want using custom citation formats (see APA 5th as an example of one we ship). In the custom format you'd tell Bookends to output the name, original publication date, and final data, something like this

a [u11]d

u11 = original publication date field

I have a similar question. If I'm using my own custom format, where would I enter a [u1]d, for example, to see Foucault ([1976]1998) within the text itself. I have managed to change the settings so I see the original publication date within the bibliography, e.g. Foucault, M [1976] (1998) The History of Sexuality: The Will to Knowledge. Place the [u1] in the custom citation format, not the "parent" format. Does that answer your question?
