Inconsistent sorting when showing "All" references

(Bookends 11.0.6, Mac OS X 10.6.4.)
I've noticed recently -- say, the last couple of months (but I'm not sure if this happened before) -- that the sorting order of the "All" group in my Bookends database will vary widely at different times -- different references will be listed in different orders near the "top" of that list. (I have the "authors" column in the list selected, sorted in ascending alphabetical order, so the first several hundred references -- edited collections or anonymous newspaper stories -- are blank in that field, while "editors" may contain text and "date" and "title" always contain text, etc.)
In other words, when I open BE for the first time, a particular series of references is listed -- let's call that the "default" ordering. If I then display any static or smart group, then switch back to "All", the default ordering will be changed: some new references are included near the top, some old ones have moved further down in the list. If I repeat this procedure with a different static group, the default will change again. I've tried Verifying, Reindexing, and Rebuilding, the database, with no effect: selecting a custom group will always result in a varying sort of All. The only group that doesn't produce this behavior is "Hits" -- if I select Hits, the sorting of All is always the same. Interestingly, All > Hits > All will result in a consistent sort, but one that is different from that displayed when BE is first opened.
This inconsistency isn't a problem for using the database, but I can't tell if it's normal behavior or (as it seems to me) a bug in how BE sorts All when returning from a custom group.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?
