merge databases AND attached PDF files

Post by mwarner »

I've found several discussion that cover merging two BE databases (e.g. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1998&p=9066&hilit=m ... ases#p9066), but I'm left wondering how I get all of my attached PDF files back into one folder. It is really as simple as copying my most recent attachments folder over the other one, and will the merged BE database still have the correct links to the attachments?

Thanks for any input you can offer.

There is no need to worry about attachments. Bookends databases don't store the pathnames of attachments, just the names. If the attachment is in the default folder (or subfolder), Bookends will find it. If it was not moved when you attached it, but left in place, Bookends fill find it. Attachments aren't db-specific.

Try it yourself. Move one ref with an attachment to another database. See that Bookends will still find the attachment even in the new db.

This is a follow up to this topic that I posted a while ago. I finally merged two databases from two different Macs, and as expected, there are some refs in the merged database that are missing their attachments that are sitting on the other Mac. Is there a way to quickly search the database to find all refs that have orphaned attachments? Likewise, does anyone out there have a suggestion for avoiding this problem in the first place. I suppose I could use a 3rd party syncing app and move sync my the two attachment folders on the two macs making sure to only migrate in the right direction, and then BE should have all the attachments in the right place I think.

Hi,

Yes, I'd use DropBox to sync the pdfs. Assuming they're in the default attachment folder or subfolder, Bookends will then find them on the new Mac.
