Hi,
I am having trouble with citations in which I would like to put 'as quoted by'. For example…

temp citation
[author, date, #99999@20\ as quoted by \author, date: 43]
The first citation entered via the bibliography panel in Mellel and the second by-hand

After scanning this is appearing as ???

After un-scanning

Kierkegaard and Lowrie, 1968, #28711@100\ quoted by \Astley, 2002:5\ quoted by \

I wonder what the correct way of entering this might be.

Using Mellel and Bookends 11.1

Thanks

Graham

You can't do

{Alfaro Giner, 2001, #3263\ as quoted by \; Borobio et al., 1987, #1324}

in one citation group because Bookends will separate them with the citation separator in the scanned citation, something like

(Alfaro Giner, 2001 as quoted by ; Borobio, Gómez-Pantoja, & Morales, 1987)

You need to enter them as two temp citations, like this

({Alfaro Giner, 2001, #3263\ as quoted by \} {Borobio et al., 1987, #1324})

which generates (APA 5th format)

(Alfaro Giner, 2001 as quoted by Borobio, Gómez-Pantoja, & Morales, 1987)

Note that (1) there is a space between the two citations, (2) you must tell Mellel to exclude enclosing punctuation for the two temp citations, and (3) you must provide the enclosing parentheses yourself, in the text.

I should note that the solution I gave you works, but there is a more powerful method you might want to consider if this situation arises frequently. That is the use of metatypes. To do this, you would create a parent:child relationship in preferences (Links) between the original text and the source that quoted it (something like Quoter:Original Text). Then assign that link relationship to the references.

In the format you are using, create a metatype for that relationship, and fill out the order field as described in the user guide. Now you can create complex citations that include metadata from two different references, such as

(Smith, 1990, as quoted by Jones in "My review of the world", 2010, Plenum Press, NY)

This may be overkill in your particular situation, but you (and others) might find it useful.

Thanks,
quoting sources as part of another source often arises and so I will look at this suggestion more closely.
