How to edit field labels for custom reference type

I'm posting this to the forum since I'm sure others are having (had) trouble figuring this out. This is one of those things that should be very intuitive in BE or at least easy to find in the manual, but to me neither is the case.

I want to create a custom reference type by either editing a pre-existing reference type that I will never use (Artwork) or starting fresh from one of the Unused types. I want to set up this reference type so only a few windows are visible when filling in the reference info (e.g. title, author, date). I've got as far as the preference window for this and can't figure out how to do it. Any ideas?

Mark

By "a few windows are visible" I assume you mean "a few fields are visible". If so, you can't do that (which is why you don't find it mentioned in the documentation). You can change the field labels (in preferences), but the actual fields on display are the same for all Types.
