Dropbox Sync

Post by pgseye »

Hi,

I know there are a couple of threads already on this, but would to clarify a couple of things.

I've only ever used a laptop, but have decided to try a mac mini and would like to be able to keep data on the MBP synced for when I'm away. I've read about the Bookends sync function and that's something I may still try.

With regards to Bookends files - there are 3 folders in total with data, right?

1. The Bookends App folder (~/Applications/Bookends 11 Folder)

2. Ancillary files (~/Library/Application Support/Bookends)

3. Database files - wherever you choose to store them.

So, if I placed these 3 folders into Dropbox, then made symlinks of each folder (with the same name as the original folder) and placed them in their original respective paths, that should technically keep things in sync?

Jon, are there any 'installation files'? ie I can just copy the app over?

Anyone know if running one computer with Snow Leopard and one with Lion might cause database conflicts?

Thanks a lot.

HI,

I don't use DropBox personally, so others can comment, but what you outline seems fine.

But,

1. If you are using Bookends 11.1.7, the Bookends 11 Folder is obsolete. It isn't used at all any more, you can get rid of it.
2. If you're copying over the ~/Library/Application Support/Bookends folder, that's everything that Bookends installs.
3. Your attachments should be synced, also. They are where ever it is specified in Bookends preferences.

Thanks Jon,

That is handy to know that about the Bookends App folder - I was wondering why there seemed to be a lot of duplicated files in that and the App Support folder. I am running 11.1.7. Have now left the Bookends app by itself in the App folder.

Would be keen to hear from others out there about their Dropbox tips/experiences, etc.
