import "legacy" word .docx into Mellel

Hiya
I'm toying with the idea of switching from Word to Mellel
If I have a "legacy" (actually Word 2011 .docx) document with lots of Bookends citations, is there anyway to convert them into Mellel citation objects? Does anyone have a smart bit of Applescript or VBA to do this?
Or is it a case of keeping the document as an RTF and scanning it, and not using Mellel citation objects?
What are my options?
I havent' actually started using Mellel yet, so sorry if I've misunderstood how Mellel and Bookends interact.
