PDF Reader notes

Post by AsafKeller »

This topic was explored in the forum in the past, but I am not sure of the current status. As far as I can tell, BE cannot display Skim notes, nor can it display .skim note files. BE can display notes created in Preview, but does not index them (cannot search them). Am I correct?

What would be particularly useful is an option for BE to monitor annotations/notes created in Preview/Skim, and display these notes in BE's note stream. That would allow a more fluid integration with the PDF reader and with other applications. A similar symbiosis exists between BibDesk and Skim.

EDIT: BE does display Skim notes, if the Skim file is saved as "PDF with Embedded Notes". However, BE does not appear to index these notes.

That's not a bad idea. I have no idea how easy it would be to implement, but I'll think about it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I'll vote for this feature as well. Didn't know about the advantage of embedded notes feature; so far I've just c/p notes (mark all in sidebar in Skim and pasted them in the note stream in BE. However, it's a bit cumbersome task in the long run and sometimes I tend to forget to do it.

It would be fantastic if there was some way for BE to read Skim notes/annotations without them having to be embedded in the PDF. Skim is IMO by far the best way to read PDFs for academics and having its non-destructive annotations displayed in the BE note-stream would be brilliant, if its possible.

I agree it would be nice. Bookends users WebKit to read pdfs, which can't read Skim. It also has it's own pdf reader, which conceivably could read non-embedded Skim notes, but I suspect it's a non-trivial exercise.
