On a Mac OS X based machine Bookends provides a highly effective tool for managing references. Similarly for managing abbreviations is there any capability in Bookends that I have missed or other app that you are able to suggest/recommend.
Ideally it would be good to reference the abbreviations back to the documents in which they are first defined. For me these are typically telecom standardisation bodies like International Telecom Union, Internet Engineering Task Force, 3rd Generation Partntership Programme, European Telecommunication Standards Institute, etc. Ideally being able to do this in Bookends would be appealing. Including potentially enriching abstracts, titles, etc with a link when entered abbreviation used, so that you can click through to reference in which defined. As well as to be able to generate an abbreviation list.
Thank you for your consideration.

Abbreviation List Capability or Alternative App?
Re: Abbreviation List Capability or Alternative App?
I'm not sure if this is what you're asking for, but journal glossaries provide the ability to define abbreviations that, when entered in the journal field, expand to the full journal name. For example, you could type "pnas" and Bookends would insert "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA". Please see the User Guide (Help menu) for details about journal glossaries.

Re: Abbreviation List Capability or Alternative App?
Thanks for the response. Indeed, I had spotted and used the capability to do a Journal Glossary. So when I type in e.g. 3GPP it expands to 3rd Generation Partnership Programme. More a Standard [Specification] than a Journal but Bookends serves equally well to keep track of these references.
What I am after now is a place to store abbreviations/acronyms that occur in abstract and relate to the article itself. For example, "... the architectural framework of IMS underpins emergent technologies such as RCS ...". Where I could expand the abbreviations IMS and RCS [shown as links] and also provide references. So for IMS it would be expansion "IP Multimedia Subsystem" and reference "3GPP. TS 22.228 Service requirements for the Internet Protocol multimedia core network subsystem. 3GPP. 2012;Release 11".

Re: Abbreviation List Capability or Alternative App?
I see. That's not possible, and it doesn't look like a feature particularly relevant to reference management. There are third party utilities that do what I think you want, though, such as TypeItForMe:

Re: Abbreviation List Capability or Alternative App?
I'm not sure I have explained myself correctly.
What I am looking for is not about simply expanding text, which TypeItForMe appears to be about - although many thanks for the suggestion of this app.
What i'm after does, IMHO, form part of a Reference Management system. That where an abbreviation contained in a title or abstract has an associated reference, to where defined, then this is shown as a link [different colour and underscored] and this can be followed. Effectively being able to "click through" from a term to a paper, standard, etc in which the definition of that abbreviation can be found.
Right now I'm having to run the Glossary app. Which integrates with BibDesk.
In absence of a standalone converged reference management solution based on Bookends, please can suggest how best to go about integrating Glossary with Bookends?

I'm not familiar with Glossary app. Please contact tech support off-forum with more information.
