Conditional formatting based on publication date?

I'm preparing an article for the historical journal Intersections, which requires some particular formatting:
For works published in 1800 and after, the authors are indicated by last name and initials, and publication is indicated by Place: Date.
For works published before 1800, the authors are indicated by last name and first name(s), and publication is indicated by Place, Publisher: Date.
I know I can handle this situation by creating a new reference type for books before 1800, but I'm wondering whether there is conditional formatting to handle either of those differences. I didn't see anything in the User Guide about tests for conditional formatting, only conditions that apply if a given field is empty.
Thanks for any help!
