Mixing citation and bibliography references

Post by MBurer »

I have a document which includes Bookends citations in my footnotes, but I also want to have a bibliography at the end with important related works not cited previously in the document. Is there a way to include those references at the end with temporary citations, forcing Bookends to use bibliography style for them? I don't want to create a separate bibliography as it would be a much simpler workflow to have everything within the one document.

Thanks,

You mean you want citations in the bibliography that don't appear in the text? Yes. You can insert "self-deleting" citations that will still appear in the bib by preceding them with an exclamation point:

{!temp cite}

Jon: Thanks for the quick response. That actually is not what I meant. I want to insert citations into my footnotes that will be formatted as citations, and then at the end of the same document I want to insert additional works that will be formatted in bibliography style. At this point I am not concerned with formatting a separate bibliography of all my cited works.

Thanks,
Michael

I guess I don't understand then. That's how Bookends always works. Your in-text citations (footnotes are in-text) will appear in the final citations form in the text (footnote) and in the bibliography format at the end (assuming you tell Bookends to generate a bibliography when you scan).

I don't understand this sentence:

"At this point I am not concerned with formatting a separate bibliography of all my cited works."

Please give a simple example of what you want for the final output.

The key for me is the books, etc., in the bibliography at the end will not have been cited earlier in the paper; they are additional helpful works for further study.

Perhaps I can rephrase the question differently: In the same document, can I make some temporary citations output as citation/footnote style and others as bibliography style?

I still think Jon’s original reply offers the solution for your problem: You can suppress the display of citations, so that they only appear in the bibliography, but not in-text or in footnotes. For me this works very nicely to include additional works that only appear in the bibliography (i.e. helpful stuff for further study).

Is it possible to do the reverse, that is, suppress a citation so it doesn't occur in the bibliography?

I just figured out the answer to that last question:

[$tempcite]

I think between using ! and $ I'll be able to do what I want. Thank you for the help!
