Formerly, at scanning time, when the short title tag ("s") was asked for in a (repeated secondary) reference and when that field was left empty within the reference, BookEnds used the content of the Main title field ("t") instead. In the latest versions, I’m given to understand that it is no more the case: no title at all appears in the citation in such a case.

Has something be changed in the program? Shall we provide explicitly a short title if we want to use the "s" tag? It could be deduced from p. 29: "Short Title shortcut: if you Control- or right-click in the Title field, Bookends will offer to put the selected text in the Short Title field."

In a former version (from 2010), I read: "If the Short Title is specified in a format and a reference has none (i.e. it is empty), the Title will be used instead."
This was, at my sense, a better solution.

The substitution of the full title for the short title (if that field was empty) was removed in Bookends 12 (it's listed in the Update History):

• If the short title field is empty it will be treated as such when formatting
Previously, the full title was used in this instance.

However, the old behavior will be restored in the next update, 12.0.5 (expected to be released Saturday, Sep. 28).
