Possible to cross-post attachments between 2 IntHDs?

Jon, et al:

I recently set up my MBPro with 3 internal partitions, one with Sno Lep, the second with a recent upgrade to ML, possibly moving to Mav in a bit, and the third for a LM OS. I'm running BE 11.3.7 I believe. I've had my various BE databases stored in the SL partition; and I also installed BE in the ML partition, whether I needed to or not is another story.

I found that I can be booted up in the ML partition and open the database in the SL partition, and I can add references to it, across the partition. However, if I try to add an attachment to that reference, sometimes it appears to be "happening" . . . but when I boot into the other partition, whichever one doesn't seem to matter, the attachments aren't making it across--"attachment not found" shows in the attachment tab. I'm wondering if there is a way to do that, or if the answer is upgrading to 12, if doing that would improve the situation?

It's not an impossible sproblem, I don't attach too many files; but, I consider the SL system to be more solid and reliable and I prefer keeping my databases/libraries there, but the ML side has more eye flash. It would be helpful if there is a way to get those attachments to, uh, cross-post. I've taken a few PDFs and copied them and moved them into the public folder of the SL system when I was in ML . . . just a little time consuming. But, when I tried to select the BE "Attachments" folder across the partition using the "add attachments" menu . . . I got an error window, "Sorry, we don't cross-post to foreign HDs." Any thoughts? Short cuts? Work arounds?

That error message isn't coming from Bookends. I don't know what app (perhaps the OS) is doing it.

Are the partitions all mounted at once (that is, do you see the other two as mountable drives in the Finder)? If so, I see no reason that attachments can't be saved from one to the other (you can do this with any server, for example). If they're not mounted, however, then Bookends can't move an attachment from one to the other.

Thanks again for your help . . . the "error message" was humor . . . it just shows "file not found" in the attachments window when the attachment was added in the other partition than that of the booted one. So, either way, if I add it in SL, it will show there, but not in ML . . . and vice versa.

But, yes, the two OSX partitions are mounted at once, they all three show up in the Finder . . . and I can open apps, some apps from the SL partition from the booted ML partition. And, indeed, the addition of references does work across the partitions, but there seems to be a blockage in terms of getting the attachments to make it across . . . .

Believe it or not, I've had just as odd error messages reported by users -- you never joke with tech support!

Bookends saves the alias of an folder in which an attachment is stored. IIRC, the alias is relative to the root volume. So if you boot into a different partition, the alias won't resolve. An if it's in the default folder, there is only one Documents per mounted volume. So for you to access the attachment in three different partitions, I think you'll have to have a copy on each (you can email it to yourself and add it for each partition). At least this is what I think explains the issue.

Sorry for the humor, I was trying to make it so silly that it was obviously humor, but that clearly failed . . . it's a forum, there should be room for some humor on a forum, no?

Anyway, thanks for the info, seems like you are saying that the attachments aren't going to make the jump across the divide. I'm not trying to have BE in the three partitions, only two of them are running OSX . . . the third is for Linux. Anyway, sure I could email the PDFs, but usually I'm downloading them from Pubmed; so I recently put a copy in the other partitons public folder, and then when I reboot I can add the attachment, etc. A little time consuming, but do-able.

Well, "you never joke with tech support!" was meant to be ironic...

Cute . . . irony is a form of humor . . . the problem with irony is it's usually not far from serious . . . . I wasn't totally sorry, actually I was at work and started to type that post and then got busy and came back to it 45 mins later and after I added some more stuff and clicked submit . . . I was logged out--so I was more sorry about losing the post . . . Oh, the irony of life . . . it's unceasing and omnipresent . . . . : - )))
