Hello,

I need to use ACS (American Chemical Society) style, but it is not an option in the format manager. How can I add it?

There are two answers to that. The general one in this situation is, create it yourself. Creating/editing formats is not difficult. It is covered briefly in the Bookends Tutorial.pdf and in detail in the User Guide (both in the Help menu).

A useful tool is Biblio -> Create Format Catalog. This will generate a file containing examples of all the formats we ship. It is highly likely you'll find an identical (or perhaps just highly similar) format, one you can either use or use as the basis of a new format and tweak.

The Formats section of this forum can also be a useful resource, where users can directly exchange formats that have created.

The second answer which is particular to this question, I believe that we do have the ACS format. It's called J Am Chem Soc

Thank you for the help. I wasn't aware that ACS was in the list; a search function would be nice in the format catalog. It gets kind of difficult to find formats, esp. if they are under slightly different names.

The list in the Format Manager is alphabetized already. The naming rules for journals listed on PubMed are uniform -- Bookends uses Medlars abbreviations, not common but non-standardized casual names (e.g. ACS, JEM, PNAS)). What kind of search function do you mean? If you meant the Format Catalog -- that opens in TextEdit. There is a search function there.

Although correct for J Am Chem Soc, I'm looking for a generic ACS citation format for a journal article:

Author, A. A; Author, B. B; Author, C. C. Title of Article. Journal Abbreviation (italics) [Online if online] Year (boldface), Volume (italics), Pagination.

I can get close using the formats manager:

Is there anyway I can fine tune this (i.e., remove the periods after the first two authors' initials)?

Bookends will either add periods after initials or not, you can't tell it to do so for some but not all. Two possible workarounds come to mind.

1. Enter the names the initials punctuated as you want them, then tell Bookends to output "full names".

2. Post-process after the scan in your word processor, replacing .; with ;
