APA strikes again. This time the use of suffixes such as "Jr." or "Sr" etc. If you enter to get correct bibliography then the citation is wrong for APA rules, giving for example, Larson, Jr. (2009) rather than Larson (2009). If you change to get the correct citation then the bibliography is not correct for APA. Again my least favorite reference manager (End*****) gets this right so I don't think it is impossible to do.

It's not impossible to do, but I wonder about generally applying it. For example, the rule could be that additions like Jr. be omitted from citations, but what if the citation is a footnote (which is often akin to a bibliography entry)? Would the Jr. be included or not?

Always for APA - they don't like footnotes either. The citation style applies irrespective of the document element it is in.

From the APA style blog: The only use for footnotes in APA Style is to provide additional content that supplements the text (e.g., to briefly acknowledge a tangential idea that is nevertheless important to the discussion or to note copyright permission for reprinting a lengthy quote). Endnotes are never used in APA Style, but you’ll find more about content footnotes in section 2.12 of the APA Publication Manual.

I didn't actually mean in APA. I mean in any format. Bookends could strip out suffixes in citations (which would include footnotes). But that might be incorrect for footnotes in other formats. If anyone has any thoughts about this, please chime in.

I use Chicago/SBL Handbook/Turabian style of formats in my writing, so I'd use prefixes like this:

1. Always in Bibliography
2. Always in a long citation (i.e., first note)
3. Never in subsequent, short citations

That seems relatively uncontroversial. In the next release, I'll plan to have Bookends omit name suffixes in custom citations when the secondary (short) form is created.
