I recently downloaded bookends for the mac and went about filling it up using the 'online search' tool. After an hour of it functioning perfectly, however, it has seized up. Every search now results in "There are no matches." I've tried restarting everything. I've even re-downloaded bookends from the app store. Nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Did you try searching with different services (i.e. Google Scholar, Library of Congress, …)?
