Annotating two column PDFs

I just ran into a hitch annotating some PDFs, and I wonder if anybody knows a workaround. Some of the journals that I have PDFs from are two column journals. The result is that attempting to highlight text in those PDFs does not work at all. This is not just a problem with Bookends, the same problem occurs in Skim, DTPO, and Bookends. I can annotate and comment just fine; highlighting does not work. Has anybody else ran into this trouble with two column PDFs, and if you have, have you discovered a workaround. Or is it just a case that you cannot highlight a two column PDF? Cheers!
