I have quite some imported references that have "first name, last name" in the author field.
Is there any way to swap the first and last names short of doing it by hand?

If there really is already a comma between them, then no. If there is just a space, you can use Global Change -> Normalize Names

P.S. If Bookends did this on import, you can edit the import filter to tell Bookends what the true order of the names is in the text file you imported, then import again.
