The context menu for list items

Split off from another UI thread, I find the context menu for list items contains lots of non-list entries that I never use. More confusingly the commands that relate to a SINLGE list item are intermingled with those that relate to ALL list items. Perhaps there is no way to know if a context menu has been triggered from a selected item or not, but they really are different for my needs. I personally never really use the context menu for list-level management, but use it very often for single-item management which I think is how most users would use it?

For a single list item:
• "Change column from ... to..." — this is already available in the context menu of the list HEADER where it makes sense, why give this top spot here?
• "Select references with orphaned attachments" — this doesn't relate to a single item, and is not an often used function.
• Sort by Label — this doesn't relate to a single item, makes more sense in the header or elsewhere.
• Mark all — not single item, but I think this probably is useful as it changes selection from a single item
• Attachment flow... — this is a View UI item in the main menu IMO, not relevant to a single item or the whole list.
• Create tag cloud... — again not a single item feature and not very relevant.
• EMail... — I never ever use this personally.

I personally never use the copy citations ... etc. as i use keyboard or icon but imagine these are all very popular.

I use Pubmed and DOI features much more often and these are buried at the bottom of the menu.

Those that make sense for single selections work on the first selection, those that make sense for multiple selections work on those. As for what you find useful or not, what can I say? We have other users... :-)

Is there really no way to make the context menu "contextual"? Single or multiple item selection have clearly different meanings in my mind, why lump this all into a monolithic menu?

And what about those menu items that don't directly relate to single OR multiple entries but are general UI toggles, why overload the item context menu with these?
