There is a magazine Type, if you want to refer to the entire thing. And you can create your own Type (in Preference, rename one of the Unused Types to whatever you want). As for splitting the PDF -- you're saying that you have the entire magazine as one large PDF? If you want to have the individual articles attached to a unique reference, then yes, you'd have to split them (or obtain them as individual articles). If you just want to have them available when you click on the reference, attach the entire PDF to each article. Bookends stores a reference to the PDF, not the PDF itself, so there is no wasted space in the database or on disk.
