Text entry into search window

Hi,
Am I the only one who has huge problems with text entry into a search window? It is a problem that is not easy to describe but it only cropped up in the last few months (I do not remember exactly when, but I wrote to Jon when I first noticed it) and despite several updates it has not gone away. In a private email I was told the problem is not Bookends but Apple but an answer like that solves nothing, wherever the problem might be (moreover none of my other Apple products seem to be affected by it).
Anyway, this is what happens. When I enter one or more words in the Live Search window for the first time (i.e. in an empty window) all is well and the search is performed. When I next try to enter some new term(s) the window kind of freezes and nothing happens: no terms are entered until I take the cursor to the window and click on my track pad, only then are the new characters inserted and is the search carried out. I can reproduce this when I do the following:
1 enter search term in empty Live Search window
2 Put cursor on one of the hits in the main window
3 Move cursor back to Live Search window which now has the old search term and click once. The cursor shows up as vertical bar at the end of the search term
4a try to type a new search term
4b try to move the cursor back to delete old search term
4c try to use shift-cmd-cursor left to highlight old search term(s)
In all these cases (4a-c) nothing happens. Clicking again somewhere in the Live Search field restores focus and all is well again.
My impression is that despite clicking once inn 3 and the cursor being shown as a vertical bar, the program for some reason or other removes the focus, which would explain why nothing works thereafter.
When I reported this some months ago, I was on Yosemite which had become somewhat convoluted because it had been installed on top of Mavericks. I recently did a clean install (just before El Capitan came out) but it made no difference. I am still on a mid 2011 27" iMac with 10.10.5 and Bookends 12.6.
My question is whether anyone else can reproduce this? If someone found a solution? If we can expect a solution?
PS. I did a search to see if this problem had been reported before but the Forum does not accept either (or both) the search terms "search" and "window".
PS2. I do not know if it is relevant but my Bookends library is kind of large with just short of 20.000 entries (19673 to be precise).
