Format Manager - insert URL

Post by mwra »

Hi. I'm trying make a format for an internet reference but I can't get just the URL. If I put a 'z' it inserts both the URL from the URL field and unbidden adds the title which the format I want doesn't allow. Is there a code or modifier to correctly insert the actual URL with no extra stuff?

Also, how to I refresh the sample reference at the bottom of the format Manager to test my change without having to close the dialog. Tab? Enter?

z will output only what's in the URL field, nothing else. I'm guessing you have more text in the field than you can see -- click on the label (name) of the URL field in the reference edit window and you'll see all that's there.

The example updates every time any item in the format window is changed -- if it's text, it updates when you leave the field (e.g. tab). You can always force an update by editing (even if you undo the edit, the example will be updated when you tab).

Thanks for the nudge. An infelicitously constructed sample URL and a line break was making look like the title was being reported. All well now and also happily tabbing to update the formats.

It's odd that the format segment ( “t”,) renders with the comma inside [sic] the closing quote and note as per my format rubric. Is this a subtle US/UK English quoting issue. IIRC, in the US closing punctuation is placed outside the quote. IOW, UK “Some title,” and opposed to US “Some title”, - or am I missing something about how formats are set up? Whilst I'm in learing mode I might as well get this right (FWIW, in this case i'm using IEEE format).

Many thanks.

Yes, it's a US vs. British usage thing (but it's in the US that the comma goes inside the closing quote mark, Brits tend to put it outside). See this

In any case, for cited pages it's a setting you can adjust in the format. And for the references themselves, that's up to you -- you tell Bookends where you want the comma when you design the format:

"t",

or

"t,"

Very belated thanks - that all makes sense.
