export to BibTex

Post by Adrian »

Hello

As I work in parallel both on my iPad and on my MacBookPro, I am very happy that Bookends exists for both operating systems. However, NisusWriterPro or any other rich text format editor cannot have for the moment any correspondent in iOS, so that I ended up using only Bookends (including the very useful Note-taking) and Texpad, which is a Latex editor both for OS X and iOS.

In order to create BibTex bibliographies for Latex I choose in (OS X) Bookends:
File → Export References → Bibliography Format → (Output=BibTeX;as=BibTeX;SendTo=Disk)

I apologise for giving here two records from what I obtain through such an export:

@Book{,
author = {},
title = {Reality and/or Realities},
volume = {1},
pages = {168},
editor = {Abadi, Mauricio and Rogers, Susan Hale},
publisher = {Jason Aronson},
address = {Northvale, NJ \& London},
year = {1995},
abstract = {},
keywords = {}}

@Article{,
author = {Alexandrov, Haralan and Chichek, Rafael},
title = {Pathological consequences of abused socialism},
journal = {Organisational and social dynamics},
volume = {5},
number = {1},
pages = {91 -- 110},
year = {2005},
abstract = {},
location = {},
keywords = {}}

Such records are unacceptable as LATeX bibliography. They should be:

@Book{Abadi1995,
author = {},
title = {Reality and/or Realities},
volume = {1},
pages = {168},
editor = {Abadi, Mauricio and Rogers, Susan Hale},
publisher = {Jason Aronson},
address = {Northvale, NJ \& London},
year = {1995},
abstract = {},
keywords = {}}

@Article{Alexandrov2005,
author = {Alexandrov, Haralan and Chichek, Rafael},
title = {Pathological consequences of abused socialism},
journal = {Organisational and social dynamics},
volume = {5},
number = {1},
pages = {91 -- 110},
year = {2005},
abstract = {},
location = {},
keywords = {}}

If Alexandrov2005 is not unique, lower-case letters should be added to the it, that is, Alexandrov2005a.

It would help me a lot in my work process to be able to export from Bookends this way.

Many thanks
Jon

Entering the key for a reference is up to you. If you enable it in preferences, Bookends will generate these for you automatically, and it ensures uniqueness. And you can do this at any time yourself with Refs -> Generate BibTeX Key (which will work with all selected references, so you can do this in batch).

If you're going to use BibTeX with Bookends you should read the documentation carefully. In fact, there's an entire Appendix on the subject in the User Guide.
