Endnote Import feature request

Hi,
just imported my whole Endnote 7 database over to Bookends 8.1 due to Nile's extremely unprofessional behavior with respect to EN8. My request is for attachments also to be processed during the conversion. Right now all that happens is that the name of the attached file is added to the keyword field. Would it be possible for the file to instead be attached to the BookEnds record? Otherwise it will be necessary to go through and redo the attachments by hand and then delete the file names in the keyword field. :P

Thanks!

Joe

Hi jdien

If I understand you correctly, Bookends *did* attach the file (this is assuming you imported via XML). Bookends stores attached file names in the Keywords field, preceded by a bullet.

If you move your EN attachments to the default Bookends attachments folder (see Preferences), you'll find that Bookends will open them as you expect without any further effort on your part.

If this is not working as expected, please contact me directly and we'll work it out.

Thanks for the workaround!

For the sake of anyone else running into this, I'm posting Jon's fix to this issue. I have to say his quick responses and releases of updates are an enormous improvement on the Endnote folks who never even released a bugfix update for EN8 (for the Mac) and expect users to pay again for EN9, which is already the subject of serious bug reports. :P

Actually, this will work for EN 8 XML -- I didn't put in the code for EN 7 XML.

So:

1. For now, if you transfer the library to EN8 and export as EN8 XML, it should import with attachments indicated.

2. If you can wait, I've already added this code to EN 7 XML. It will be available in Bookends 8.1.1 (within a few weeks, I think).
