Renaming unfilled attachments

I'm slowly working Bookends into my work flow; the big challange right now is that a sizable minority of my imported PDFs come in with no information filled. Most of these I can find on Google Scholar, but when I have an attachment highlighted, and click "Online Search" and identify the reference on-line, the on-line reference gets imported as a new reference, and no information is associated with the attachment. How do I lookup and associate information with an attachment that was initially imported with no associated data?
