What does it mean when the check boxes are checked?

Whenever I bring up Bookends, I have a bunch of references with checked check boxes. These don't seem to relate to any search I've done; can someone tell me what these mean?

That means the reference is a "hit". You can manipulate the "hits list" in many ways (export, make a bibliography, do a Global Change, etc.). Please see the User Guide -- there's a description of how hits are made at used near the beginning.
