Because LaTeX does not accept spaces in author or editor names (e.g. Singapore Statistics), I would like to replace the spaces automatically in Bookends when I compile the BibTex bibliography. Is there a way to do this?

Not when formatting. You could do a find/replace on the authors field and then reverse the process when done (it should be very, very fast).
